Last year’s Sonoma races gave us the closest finish in Spec MX-5 Challenge history. This year, history was made once more.
AUSTIN, June 15, 2021 – The Spec MX-5 Challenge Series’ racers prepare for another record-breaking event weekend. Sonoma Raceway will host the series in the fourth West Region event of the season. On-track, the competition is heating up.
Spec MX-5’s trip to the historic WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca did not disappoint. Built in the late 1950s this track has become synonymous with speed and rhythm. Located between Salina and Monterey, California the paved track has 180 feet of elevation with 11-turns. Arguably the most iconic part of this speedway is the “Corkscrew,” at turns 8 and 8A where drivers are challenged to react fast and maintain control.
It only took a few laps for regular season champion and points leader Brandon Hawkin’s race to go from good to bad. Qualifying in P2, he almost immediately slipped to P3 at the start as Saxon pushed DelCampo towards T1. Then on lap 2, an overly ambitious dive by P7 clipped Hawkin’s rear bumper, sending him back to P14. Hawkins would eventually finish P9, netting him only 12 points and dropping him to 3rd in the Championship.
Tonight’s event at COTA wraps up the virtual racing competition for the Spec MX-5 SimRacing Challenge series. After almost 5 months of competition, the top-25 drivers from the 8-round regular season will compete for the awesome opportunity to drive an actual NC Spec MX-5 racecar!
Last night, after over 4 months of bi-weekly events, Canadian Brandon Hawkin clinched the 8-round regular season championship with a win and a 2nd place finish beating Rhode Island’s Nathan Saxon by only 4 points! Despite a win in Race 1, the hard-charging Nick DelCampo finished a solid 3rd for the season.
