Last year’s Sonoma races gave us the closest finish in Spec MX-5 Challenge history. This year, history was made once more.
What a weekend.
Before the penultimate regional event at Thunderhill, West Region racers made their mark on Sonoma Raceway. Seven Spec MX-5 Challenge competitors led the field in the seventh and eighth races of the season.

Wyatt Couch found victory both days, pulling the win on Saturday and following a disqualified result for Bryson Morris on Sunday. Morris, who led the last lap, did not make weight during scaling.
Wesley Mollno was perhaps the most consistent racer, finishing third in Race 1 and second in Race 2. With these finishes, Mollno now leads the championship with 720 points before averaging and bonuses.
To make the weekend even more exciting…Bruno Carneiro, Driver Coach and Team Series’ competitor put down the fastest Spec MX-5 time ever at Sonoma Raceway. While running a reference lap he recorded a 1:51.4. Carneiro and teammate Ricardo Arruda continue to lead the Team Series.
West Region racers have one more chance to collect points before the championship. We will see them back on track at Thunderhill Raceway from July 31 to August 1.
