2020 Spec MX-5 Cars Available To Order

Winding Road Racing has announced that it will build 10 or more new Spec MX-5 race cars for the 2020 season. These cars will be built to the specification announced in late August for the new Spec MX-5 v2 racer by Mazda Motorsports and Spec MX-5 Challenge.

“We plan to build at least 10 cars and are taking reservations for build slots now,” said Todd Therkildsen, Competition Services Manager, Winding Road Racing. “Our production process will begin in October ahead of the first delivery of new Spec MX-5 parts from Mazda Motorsports”, noted Therkildsen. New parts for 2020 include a Roush cylinder head and Mahle pistons, expected to deliver about 15hp more than the 2019 spec. Penske single-adjustable shocks, a hardtop and Toyo tires complete the major upgrades for 2020.

New builds begin with an un-raced, un-crashed, southern street car donor. This is stripped, a TIG-welded cage is added, and the interior is painted. The car is fully inspected and excessively worn or damaged parts are replaced. Street parts are replaced with race parts (a typical build has over 100 race upgrades). Safety equipment is added, and options such as data systems, driver cooling and graphics are added. A complete list of typical and optional parts utilized is available here.

New builds are priced starting at $36,023 until January 31, FOB Austin, TX. Beyond that base price, drivers will probably want to add some of the available options, which include data systems, radios, alternative seats, wheel sets and more.
