Central And East To Meet Up At Road Atlanta In July

Cumming, Georgia (June 1, 2018) – The original plan for the Spec MX-5 Challenge was to combine the East Series and the Central Series for the Championship round at Road Atlanta in November, with each running separately until then.

They’ll meet for the first time much, much sooner.

The Series announced today that the Central Series drivers will travel east for the Atlanta Region SCCA’s July Summer Sizzle event, July 28-29. The event has been scheduled for the East Series and replaces a previously scheduled event at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit on the Central schedule.

Though running on track at the same time, points for this event will remain separate for each Series. The highest finishing East Series racer will still earn 20 points, as will the first Central Series pilot to cross the finish line.

“We talked to each of our competitors, and all wanted to be a part of the Road Atlanta weekend,” Tom Martin, of Winding Road Racing and a series principal, said. “This move accomplishes several things that help the series, most notably giving the Central Series drivers an opportunity to get onto Road Atlanta prior to the Championship Round in November.”

The move also gives each of the Series drivers an opportunity to size up the other competitors, rather than a blind showdown during the season’s last event.

“We can’t wait to welcome the Central Series to our paddock in July,” Todd Lamb, of Atlanta Speedwerks and the Spec MX-5 East Series, said. “When Tom approached me with the idea, we thought this was a tremendous opportunity for all of our drivers. From logistics to being able to place all of our drivers in one place prior to the championship, it just made sense to take this step.”

Before the July round, the East Series has one more stop – rounds five and six for the season, at Summit Point Raceway.
