The Spec MX-5 Challenge series features NC (2006-2015) Mazda MX-5s, prepared for road racing. The cars have interiors removed, full roll cages, racing seats, harnesses and nets, fire systems, modified suspensions and racing slicks. Work is currently underway to finalize the ideal components for the car. The Spec MX-5 uses the well-known MZR engine, with about 160 hp, and the cars weigh approximately 2400 lb., giving a meaningful power-weight increase over Spec Miata and making the Spec MX-5 similar to Global MX-5 Cup cars.
The Spec MX-5 Challenge series owns all of the Spec MX-5s that will be raced in 2018. This is a cost-effective approach, and means that drivers can enter the series for $45,000 without having to purchase a car. Series ownership also ensures that the cars are identically prepared. In addition, it allows the series to swap cars between drivers from event to event, so that any small car-car variations even out in the results over the season.
In 2019 and beyond the series plans to open up production and technical support for the cars, with the goal of greatly expanding car count and geographic presence.
